This is the first in a series of posts in which I try to look at the long tail theory from a critical angle and check it limits. It seems nearly impossible to overestimate the impact of Chris Anderson’s long tail theory, and it is surely inadvisable to underestimate it. And yet, one can find examples for both types of wrong reactions. I am not worried, in any sense, about old media corporations trying to dismiss the new reality and I will not shed a tear while watching them drain millions before waking up. It is the over estimators, Chris Anderson naturally being the most prominent one, that worry me.
It seems nearly impossible to overestimate the impact of ’s long tail theory, and it is surely inadvisable to underestimate it. And yet, one can find examples for both types of wrong reactions. I am not worried, in any sense, about old media corporations trying to dismiss the new reality and I will not shed a tear while watching them drain millions before waking up. It is the over estimators, Chris Anderson naturally being the most prominent one, that worry me.The long tail theory was quickly adopted by many people who found it to be the perfect tool for analyzing the new emerging online economy. Those people now tend to look at the long tail as the only possible model for online commerce, and strongly object to any contradicting evidence. In a recent post in Anderson’s blog, for example, he was startled by the claim in a NYT article, that the DVD market is hit-oriented. For Anderson, the mere thought that a niche market does not follow his famous model is a blasphemy. Furthermore, if you are looking at online success, you must think in long tail terms. You either try to become a long tail supplier like amazon or try to carve yourself a respectable niche somewhere along the tail of an existing market by using SEM and SEO. While these two approaches are viable, one should remember that other options still exist.
The most striking example for a success that does not comply with Anderson’s theory is the online T-shirt vendor, Threadless. Threadless, for those who don’t know it yet, is a niche store aimed at T-shirt aficionados. Aspiring designers are invited to submit designs for the open contest (as well as for periodic topical contests), submitted designs are uploaded to the site, to be scored by Threadless registered users. Winning designs are printed in rather low quantities and announced twice per month. Many of the designs get sold out rapidly, leaving users with the option to call for a reprint. In other words, Threadless artificially and on purpose chooses a path which Anderson would regard as crazy; it cuts its own tail. And yet, this is the exact reason for the success story that drives Threadless. This is why there is such a buzz in the blogosphere about Threadless, why people rush to buy the new designs as soon as they get the biweekly newsletter, and why people get emotionally involved with a T-shirt store. Many times artificial scarcity works!
The Threadless success could only happen on the internet, of course, it is based almost only on viral marketing through blog reactions, its customers are T-shirt fans scattered all over the globe, and the online voting process has a major part in creating the customers’ emotional involvement. But all those factors do not make Threadless a long tail company, as I said earlier, quite the opposite is true.
Some people might argue that Threadless simply found a respectable niche within the overall long tail market of T-shirts, in which Gap, for example, is located at the hits end, and Threadless, as well as others is located somewhere along the tail. I beg to differ. Anderson’s model is based on the idea that the availability of information lets each buyer find exactly what he or she was looking for instead of settling for some default hit. Threadless uses the availability of information to create an almost opposite effect, to generate a will for something you did not know you wanted. Instead of relying on infinite shelf space and back catalog, Threadless forces its customers to be aware of the very limited shelf space, and the merely nonexistent back catalog, and manages to do it successfully.
The lesson to be taken from this example is that as powerful as the long tail is, there are still many other paths to success and to exploit the advantages of the online economy, as long as you keep an open mind.

Zhang Shuhong, a Hong Kong businessman in his 50s and boss of the Lida Toy Company in the southern province of Guangdong, was found dead in his factory workshop on Saturday, the semi-official Southern Metropolitan Daily said.
About 1.5 million preschool toys made by Lida Toy, a Foshan-based contract manufacturer for Mattel Inc.’s Fisher-Price unit, were recalled across the globe by the U.S. company last week.
The recalled toys included popular preschool characters such as Elmo and Big Bird and dozens of other items. The case was the latest in a deluge of product safety scares that have tainted the “made-in-China” brand.
Lead paint has been linked to health problems in children, including brain damage. China’s quality watchdog had banned Lida from exports.
A close friend of Zhang who was also one of the major paint suppliers for the company sold the problematic paint to Lida, the newspaper said.
“(He) was so evil-hearted to have sold the fake paint to our boss … our boss was ruined by his best friend,” a manager of the company, surname Liu, was quoted as saying.
Lida was not immediately available for comment. Calls to its factory went unanswered. A spokeswoman for Mattel in Hong Kong said she was not in a position to comment.
Police were investigating the case, the newspaper said.

(Berlin, 23.08.2007) Die Gemeinschaft der oeffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten hat die Wissensplattform akademie.de ueber die Rechtsabteilung der GEZ abgemahnt: akademie.de soll sich dazu verpflichten, “nicht existente” bzw. “falsche” Begriffe wie “GEZ-Gebuehren”, “PC-Gebuehr”, “Gebuehrenfahnder”, “GEZ-Anmeldung” oder “GEZ-Abmeldung” nie wieder zu verwenden. Das Verbot wird damit begruendet, die Nutzung der Begriffe diene nur dazu, “ein negatives Image der GEZ hervorzurufen”.
UEber eine “strafbewehrte Unterlassungserklaerung” soll www.akademie.de fuer jede weitere oeffentliche Verwendung eines Verbotsworts 5.100 Euro an die GEZ bezahlen.
Bisher hatte akademie.de kostenlose Tipps und Musterbriefe im Internet veroeffentlicht, die bei der GEZ-Abmeldung oder der Klaerung der PC-Gebuehrenpflicht helfen sollten. Illegale Praktiken wurden weder empfohlen noch erlaeutert. Die Beitraege sind jetzt abgeschaltet, Besucher der gesperrten Seiten werden automatisch auf diese Infoseite umgeleitet, die ueber die in der Abmahnung uebermittelte GEZ-Wortverbotsliste informiert. Bis zur weiteren Klaerung der Rechtslage erklaert sich akademie.de wegen der Seitensperrung zur “GEZ-freien Zone” und setzt dafuer ein Logo auf die Webseite.
Bei den von den oeffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten unter Zensur gestellten Begriffen handelt es sich - wenigstens im Internet - um umgangssprachlich gelaeufige Wortbildungen zum Thema Rundfunkgebuehren. Laut Google-Sucherergebnis vom 23. August 2007 finden sich im deutschsprachigen Internet allein die Verbotsbegriffe “PC-Gebuehr(en)” auf 37.100 (31.900) Webseiten und die angeblich nicht existente(n) “GEZ-Gebuehr(en)” auf 99.500 (225.000) Webseiten.
Die Suchergebnisse bei Google fuer den untersagten Begriff “GEZ-Gebuehren” am 23.08.2007: www.gez.de liegt auf Platz 1.

Die Abmahnung zur Unterlassung “nicht existenter” oder “falscher” Begriffe auf der Website von akademie.de betrifft damit potentiell viele tausend andere Firmen, Webpublisher, Institutionen oder Personen, die die von der GEZ verbotenen Begriffe im Internet publizieren oder in Foren kommunizieren. Wegen des allgemeinen oeffentlichen Interesses werden Teile der Original-Abmahnung der Rundfunkanstalten zu Dokumentationszwecken bei akademie.de veroeffentlicht.
Ein Worthaeufigkeits-Vergleich per Google-Abfrage zeigt, dass die - nach GEZ-Meinung “nicht existenten” bzw. “falschen” - Begriffe auf deutschsprachigen Webseiten insgesamt etwa 3.000 mal haeufiger vorkommen als die Ersatzformulierungen, die in der GEZ-Wortverbotsliste als “richtig” bezeichnet werden. Nach Umschreiben der verbotenen Begriffe auf den Webseiten in abmahnsicherere “richtige” Begriffe werden die geaenderten Texte bei Internet-Suchabfragen in deutscher Normalsprache wohl kaum noch im Suchergebnis auftauchen.

The Gleaner Online team took the time to walk participants through various types of Internet marketing solutions, in particular, ad formats and properly utilising websites.
Based on a survey conducted after the seminar, the attendees expressed satisfaction with the venue, the information given, the length and way the information was presented and the level of interaction between the presenter and the audience.
“I’m sorry I came so late. The information was good and it cleared up many areas of concern,” said one individual.
The Gleaner Online’s Internet Marketing Seminar 2008, was considered by all a huge success.

The conference Gobblefest 08 is preceding the Southern Baptist of Texas Convention, Bible Conference 08, a state meeting of 2,500 churches from across Texas to show their support of the organization.
The convention will take place at Houston’s First Baptist Church Nov. 9 and 10.
Parish said over 250 people attended the event that spanned from 2 p.m. to dusk.
Nick Nunez and his son Harley, 5, of Conroe enjoyed the day’s festivities, and said their first experience at Gobblefest 08 was engaging.

If the report about global changes in the world had been written by a group of scientists and published by political analysts, it would have become something unimportant. The main goal of the latest report is to inform President-elect Barack Obama of the factors that will affect world affairs in the future. The document particularly warns Obama of the risks which may appear in the transition to the new system during the forthcoming 20 years.
Thomas Fingar, the Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, believes that there is an opportunity to avoid the harmful consequences of the transition period. Fingar believes that the USA may have a better world at its disposal by 2025 if the US administration pays attention to those problems and takes certain efforts to solve them.
It is worthy of note that these “Global Trends” reports from NIC are known for their mistakes. In “Trends 2010,” “Trends 2015” and “Trends 2020” intelligence experts predicted something absolutely contrary to their current points of view. They particularly envisaged an increasing role of the European Union and the stable growth of Western economies on the level of approximately 2 percent a year. It is supposed to happen in 2010.
The NIC has to do a very ungrateful job. It is supposed to coordinate and summarize analytical materials from all intelligence centers of the United States – the CIA, the political intelligence of the State Department, the army intelligence, the navy intelligence, the Treasury intelligence, etc. The report says that the USA will continue to lose its international influence in the world during the first quarter of the current century. It will keep its superpower status although the erstwhile predominance will be lost. The same fate is in store for the US dollar.
The report said that the current financial crisis is only the first stage of the changing global world order. The role of the US dollar as the fundamental global currency will reduce. Brazil, India and China will fill the gap that the USA will make for them. The three countries may even take measures to join their efforts. Analysts wrote that Russia, India and China hold best chances to become world’s most influential superpowers by 2025.
The multipolar world will emerge, and the Western models of economic liberalism and democracy will lose their appeal entirely. The European Union will also lose its influence. Europe will not be able to overcome its energy dependence by 2025. About 57 percent of global gas reserves in 2025 will be concentrated in Russia, Iraq and Qatar.
Many current oil makers will lose their current positions too. Six countries will control almost 40 percent of the global oil output: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Iraq.
The report pays special attention to the danger of the nuclear arms race in the Middle East. Iran’s decisions regarding its nuclear program may push several regional powers to taking more efforts on the way to building their own nukes. More importantly, the appearance of nuclear arms in the Middle East will not result in the establishment of the containment system, similar to that during the Cold War era. Quite on the contrary, the nukes will let the countries of the region continue their military and terrorist operations with the use of conventional arms.
A possible use of nuclear weapons during the upcoming 15 or 20 years will strike a severe blow on the international system, and the world will immediately face enormous humanitarian, economic and political consequences, the authors of the report wrote. A nuclear threat may lead to serious geopolitical changes when non-nuclear countries will be forced to ally with nuclear powers.
The “Global Trends 2025” report shows that the United States is losing its international role and proves to be unable to build normal relations with other countries. In general, the USA cannot find its place in the changing world.

Сегодня мы выражаем поддержку Сандею Аделаджа в сложившейся ситуации. Мы уважаем апостола Сандея, как Божьего помазанника, стратегического лидера, мудрого руководителя и исключительно порядочного человека. В это время мы призываем всех верующих к ходатайственной молитве, моральной поддержке и защите доброго имени нашего брата во Христе.
Нам необходимо быть очень осторожными относительно высказываний в адрес Божьих помазанников, т.к Слово Божье нас к этому призывает. Нам, верующим людям нельзя уподобиться этому миру, в котором судят друг друга, основываясь на непроверенных обвинениях. Мы считаем всю эту шумиху вокруг Сандея Аделаджа провокацией. Цель этой провокации разрушить церковь Божью, выдворить Божьего помазанника, уничтожить протестантское движение. Я считаю, что всякая ситуация показывает истинное лицо каждого верующего человека.
Мы не понимаем почему пасторы прогрессивных церквей не поддерживают Сандея Аделаджа, а занимают нейтральную позицию, либо позволяют резкие негативные высказывания. Это не созидает Тело Христово, а наоборот, позволяет врагам христианства атаковать наших братьев.
Мы возмущены тем, что директор CNL Максим Максимов руководствуясь непроверенной информацией сократил эфирное время для церкви “Посольство Божье”. Он, как пастор должен был обратиться к Сандею Аделаджа лично и получить разъяснения от него из первых уст. Его поступок говорит о том, что он руководствовался в принятии этого решения не Словом Божьим и братским доверием, а страхом и не доказанной информацией. Лично мы считаем, что канал CNL во многом благодаря передачам Посольства Божьего и проповедям пастора Сандея имеет большую популярность.
Создается впечатление, что те, кто искал повод обрушить обвинения на Посольство Божье - его нашел. Сегодня Посольство Божье отождествляют с компанией “Кингс Кэпитал”, обвиняя Сандея Аделаджа. Дорогие братья, откройте глаза! В нынешней ситуации ни один банк Украины не выдает депозитные вклады своим клиентам, но почему то никого не обвиняют. Очевидно, что пастора Сандея решили сделать, извините за пример, “козлом отпущения”.
Пусть Бог дает мудрости всем уважаемым людям занять правильную позицию перед Богом и не идти против Церкви Божьей.

Принципиально никого со сторонних ресурсов не привлекала. Фиг знает, как доверять… везде только и говорят, что халявы не бывает. Ситуация: Сейчас переезжаю на новую квартиру. Некоторые вещи, к сожалению (а может быть и к счатью), мне уже не нужны. Эти “лишние” вещи копились на протяжении 3-5 лет. Не знаю как перебороть боль, хочу поделиться своим сердечным разочарованием. Нашли друг друга мы с Мишей два года назад через всемирную сети. Как выяснилось у Миши уже на протяжении года есть любовница и сейчас они хотят узаконить свои отношения. А жил он со мной исключительно из-за выработанной за долгое время привычки.
