Social Madness 2.0

The recent Bonne-Tonne in our web 2.0 sphere is “Social”. Everything is social these days – social messaging, social sharing, social networking, social VC funding, social exits, social takeovers….Web 2.0 entrepreneurs must check the “Social” checkbox. Confused web 2.0 users chase one social service after the other. Really interesting and worth some investigating, or shall I say “Kerry Bradsawhing”:

Does Social Networking Promote Solitude?

I personally love socializing over the net when it comes to work. I have a limited capacity for phone calls I can conduct per day and getting to the right person at an operator, for example, can be quite a tiring task. This is why I enjoy services like Linkedin and Plaxo. They keep me up to date, get me to places I couldn’t go before and do not require any stage fright confrontation. What I did find out, though, is that I am often tempted to write another email and not make a phone call. Now, I often like to think of myself as a modern individual, but I still believe a voice conversation is much better than ten emails and that one face to face meeting is worth ten phone calls.  

At the personal level, I must admit I still haven’t found the right service. I tried Flickr, really tried, but there is something so impersonal it drove me away. I tried Friendster, classmates, “Hevre” in Israel….something didn’t stick. Too massive, too unfiltered. I don’t go there anymore but still get “personalized promotions” from those services…. I keep looking for that more personal network that can still help me expand my social circles. Despite what I wrote, I do believe it’s extremely effective. Any ideas?
