Serge and Larry the new Bonnie and Clyde?

I was having coffee with a good friend of mine this morning. “Mike”, a fellow digital citizen, who happens to be a venture capitalist these days. We were chatting about convergence and I was pitching and preaching about the endless opportunities current start ups encounter. The industry was never more inviting to new ideas and initiatives, and I was enthusiastic about the different angles of cross platform personal content sharing. As the conversation heated, we started brainstorming about one particular idea that, who knows, may actually hold water. Slowly but surely, I started noticing Mike’s face going gray. My confidence was beginning to erode, but I was still running hard. Mike, on the other hand, was going quieter and started drifting into his own zone. Finally, I couldn’t hold it back anymore and asked him what the hell was going on. He was silent for a sad, long moment, and then quietly uttered:

“This idea is actually good; Google will do it, what happens when they do?”

Ugh!

If Microsoft were the bullies, Google are the new Bonnie and Clyde. Nobody knows where and when they will strike. The myth by far exceeds the truth. The whole space is haunted and terrorized by the mere option of them coming into your store and handing out your products for free. This ain’t “do no evil”! This is all of us going evil on ourselves. I have tons of respect for Google of course, who wouldn’t? I draw a lot of inspiration from Google of course, again, who wouldn’t? But what I won’t be is intimidated by Google. Serge and Larry (and Mr. Schmidt of course) don’t own the internet! Google won’t do EVERYTHING and a good, however smaller company can compete with Google and outperform Google! Yes, I know, it sounds somewhat adolescent. Would you bet on a start up that is not afraid of Google? Be GPS powered sunglasses (I swear I saw this hallucinogenic brain fart once!) or cross continent virtual dating, Google always casts a paralyzing shadow. So enough! Let’s all stop fearing the bully! Let’s Do what we do, do it well, provide users with real value and things will be A-OK!

I totally agree.. you should never be afraid of the giant.. as some one who is in the start-up business myself.. I plan to have no fear, work hard, be creative and god willing… Google will buy my company.. :)

The guys at google are now too busy minding share price to really watch users mind-share.
Google, like Microsoft, IBM the Roman Empire and other gluts is bound to drown in its own corporate excess fat. These are the cyclical rules of social and business evolution. Young (in heart) entrepreneurs should strive to catch Google off-guard as Google did to Microsoft, and with the acceleration of events over time - this will happen soon.

I personaly HATE google , They celebrate the Huge amount of money they have by throwing it at any idea they see fit , They arnt smarter or faster or better , They just got basicly unlimited funds to crush any idea and reinvent it befor others . Sounds like Microsoft back in the days .
